There’s a moment every Christian eventually faces—the moment when your plans, your timeline, and your perfectly organized five-step life strategy all get spectacularly derailed. Not gently nudged. Not slightly adjusted. I mean full-on, flipped upside down, shaken like a snow globe derailed. And right when you’re staring at the mess wondering what happened, God quietly says, “Trust Me.”
And your first thought—if you’re honest—is, “Lord, I would, but You just wrecked my Tuesday.”
We like to believe God’s will always aligns nicely with what we want. Smooth. Predictable. Drama-free. But the Bible tells a different story. Pretty much every person God used in Scripture had their plans interrupted, redirected, or completely rewritten. Abraham had to leave everything familiar. Moses went from royal lifestyle to sheep herding. Mary’s entire future changed with one angelic announcement. Paul’s ministry plan basically turned into divine improv.
So if your life isn’t going according to your script… congratulations, you’re in excellent biblical company.
But here’s the tricky part: even when you know God is good, it’s still scary when He changes your plans. We want clarity. We want guarantees. We want a detailed map with every step highlighted. But God usually hands us one step at a time—just enough to move forward, not enough to feel fully in control.
Which is kind of the point.
When God’s plans don’t match yours, the first thing that shows up is frustration. You had expectations, after all. You had dreams, goals, ideas about how things should go. And suddenly you’re standing in the middle of Plan B, C, or Q wondering how things got so complicated. Frustration is normal. But frustration isn’t the end. It’s the doorway to surrender.
Surrender is not giving up. It’s giving over.
It’s saying, “Lord, I don’t like this, I didn’t choose this, but I’m trusting that You see something I don’t.”
The second thing that shows up is fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of messing up. Fear that maybe you misheard God or took a wrong turn or missed some divine memo. But here’s something worth remembering: God is not fragile. His plans don’t fall apart because you made one imperfect decision. You’re not powerful enough to accidentally ruin God’s will for your life. If you could, He wouldn’t be God.
The third thing that shows up is humility. You start realizing that maybe—just maybe—your plan wasn’t the best one after all. Maybe God is redirecting you away from something that would’ve hurt you. Maybe He’s preparing something better. Maybe He’s protecting you from a burden you weren’t meant to carry. God doesn’t just see the path—you are the path He’s shaping.
And then, slowly, peace enters. Not instantly. Not magically. But steadily. Peace that doesn’t depend on answers. Peace that sits with you in the uncertainty. Peace that says, “God has never let me down before… so why would He start now?”
When God’s plans don’t match yours, it helps to remember a few things:
1. God sees the whole story.
You see a chapter; He sees the ending.
2. God’s timing is intentional.
Delays aren’t rejections. Detours aren’t mistakes.
3. God works all things for good— even the plot twists you didn’t ask for.
4. Obedience unlocks clarity.
You often don’t understand the “why” until you’ve walked far enough to look back.
5. God is for you, not against you.
If He removes something, it’s because He’s making room for something better.
It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. It’s okay to ask questions. It’s okay to not have everything figured out. Faith doesn’t mean pretending you’re fine. Faith means trusting God while you’re figuring it out.
Your plans may have been good—but God’s plans are divine. And while His path might not be the one you expected, it will always, always be the one that leads you exactly where you’re meant to be.
